Corn: The American Crop

Corn is perhaps the most American crop. It was domesticated in central America thousands of years ago, and is now ubiquitous in the American countryside, with endless fields of corn visible on any road trip across the country. And corn is a perfect example of how humans have domesticated crops, how studying and breeding crops has given us insight into the biological world, and the powerful and controversial new techniques of genetic engineering. This talk will use corn as a launch vehicle for discussions on plant genetics and modern agriculture, and include a discussion on communicating science through effective videos online.

Science On Tap is a place where, for the price of a beverage, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place outside a traditional academic context, at the Kirkwood Station Restaurant & Brewing Co.

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month during the academic year, usually from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. The standard format is as follows: about 45 minutes of presentation, followed by discussion until 8:30 PM.
